Grosh Privacy Policy

Grosh (“we,” “us,” or “our”) is a meal planning and grocery shopping app. We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting the personal information you share with us. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
1. Information We Collect
Account Information
- Email address — used for authentication and account recovery
- Display name — shown to household members you share lists with
- Authentication tokens — managed by our auth provider to keep you signed in
We support Google Sign-In. When you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email address. We do not access your Google contacts, calendar, or other Google data.
Data You Create
- Recipes — titles, ingredients, steps, images, and source URLs you import or enter
- Meal plans — which recipes you schedule for which days
- Shopping lists — items, quantities, and check-off status
- Pantry items — items you mark as on-hand, with optional expiration dates
- Staples — recurring items you regularly buy, with brand and cadence preferences
- Household data — household name and members you invite to share lists
- Feedback — when you adjust quantities, accept/reject pantry deductions, or provide substitution feedback
Automatically Collected Data
- Usage events — which features you use (e.g., voice capture, cart building, recipe import) to help us improve the app. These are tied to your household, not sold or shared.
- Device information — browser type, operating system, and screen size for rendering the app correctly
- Error logs — crash reports and error messages to help us fix bugs
AI Processing
Grosh uses AI (large language models) to help with:
- Converting recipe URLs into structured ingredient lists
- Matching ingredients to store products
- Suggesting meal plans based on your cookbook
- Processing voice input into shopping list items
When we send data to AI providers (such as Anthropic or OpenAI), we send only the minimum information needed — typically ingredient names, recipe text, or your voice transcription. We do not send your email, name, or account information to AI providers. We track AI usage costs internally but do not share your data with AI providers for their training purposes.
What We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect your precise location
- We do not access your contacts, camera roll, or microphone beyond the voice capture feature you explicitly activate
- We do not collect payment or credit card information (we do not process payments)
- We do not use tracking pixels, third-party analytics, or advertising SDKs
- We do not sell your data to anyone, ever

3. Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored on Convex, a cloud database platform hosted in the United States. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Authentication is handled by BetterAuth with secure session management.
We take reasonable measures to protect your data, but no system is 100% secure. If we discover a data breach that affects your personal information, we will notify you promptly.
4. Data Sharing
We share your data only with the following service providers, solely to operate the app:
- Convex — database and backend infrastructure
- Vercel — web hosting
- Anthropic / OpenAI — AI processing (ingredient matching, recipe parsing). Only recipe/ingredient text is shared, never personal information.
- Twilio — SMS notifications (phone number only, when you opt in)
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We do not share data with advertisers or marketing companies. We do not use your data for cross-app tracking.
5. Your Rights
- Access — You can view all your data within the app at any time (recipes, lists, pantry, settings).
- Export — You can request a copy of your data by contacting us.
- Deletion — You can delete your account from the app Settings page. This permanently removes your personal information and disassociates your data. Account deletion is processed immediately.
- Correction — You can update your name and email in the app.
- Opt-out of notifications — You can disable SMS and push notifications in Settings.
6. Children's Privacy
Grosh is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.
7. Cookies & Local Storage
Grosh uses browser local storage and session cookies solely for authentication and app state (e.g., remembering your selected store). We do not use advertising cookies or third-party tracking cookies.
8. SMS Communications
If you provide your phone number and opt in, we may send you SMS messages for weekly meal plan summaries and shopping reminders. Standard messaging rates apply. You can opt out at any time in the app Settings. We will never send marketing or promotional SMS.
9. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information we collect and how it is used
- Request deletion of your personal information
- Not be discriminated against for exercising your privacy rights

10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the app or by email. The “Last Updated” date at the top of this page indicates when this policy was last revised.
